Off you go: How to become a sled pro

Whether young or old: whizzing down the slopes on a toboggan in winter is fun for everyone. We’ll tell you the perfect technique for tobogganing.

When the snow falls in winter, it is taken out of the cellar again and pulled up the mountain. We’re talking about the toboggan. With a smile on our lips and the wind on our faces, we whiz down the slope on it, alone or in a race with friends. To help you reach the finish line as the winner, here are a few tips for you on how to ride faster and safer on the sled.

The right position

One hand holds on to the sled behind you so that you don’t fall off the sled at the first pile of snow. The other hand holds on to the front of the rope. It’s not just hanging there to pull the toboggan up the mountain – you also use it to steer. Stretch out your legs and then press them against the runners from the outside above the ground. For the upper body, the further you lean backwards, the faster you ride because there is less wind resistance. Beginners are therefore best to sit upright on the sled first. You don’t have to break the slope record on your first ride, do you?

The right steering

Unfortunately, a sled does not have a steering wheel. But you can still steer it. Simply pull the rope in the direction you want to go – and lean your body to the same side. The opposite foot – i.e. in the case of a left turn it would be the right foot – presses against the runner from the outside.

The right braking

Please always brake before the curve – never stop in the middle of a curve. Because the other riders behind you can’t look around the corner. This can lead to painful accidents. How to brake? It’s simple: Put your feet on the ground and press against the runners from the side. For emergency braking, also pull the rope towards the body so that it lifts the runners at the front. The rear end of the sled drills into the fast and brings you to a stop.

Have a good trip!

Before you race down the slope with the sled, please always remember to be considerate of the other winter sports enthusiasts. Leisurely and inexperienced sledders are best off skiing at the edge of the slope first so as not to block the way for faster tobogganers. Otherwise, another accident will happen. Overtaking maneuvers are announced with a signal, just like when riding a bicycle. For example, by shouting loudly. All right? Great, then we wish you a lot of fun!

Bottom line

So, now only one thing is missing for fun on the slopes: the sled. But that’s not a problem either.
